The full-page colour illustration on the front cover of this issue is a portrait of "Le Général Duchesne: Commandant le Corps Expéditionaire de Madagascar".
In November 1894 – only a few days before this newspaper was published – the French National Assembly voted in favour of sending an expeditionary force to Madagascar. General Duchesne was appointed Commander-in-Chief of this force, which comprised 658 officers and 14,773 troops.
