This book focuses mainly on life in Madagascar's neighbouring islands of Mauritius, Reunion, the Seychelles (including the Amirantes, Cosmoledo, and the Aldabra islands), the Glorioso Islands, and the Comoros.

It is a curious book, illustrated throughout with colour photographs that have been glued in along one edge in a manner reminiscent of a sticker collection. The 73 images range in size from quarter-page to full-page, and in once case a double-page. The dust jacket is most unusual in having fully pictorial front and back covers bearing no title or other text. The title is, however, printed on the spine.

Johanna Bianchi
Née à Vienne, elle a fréquenté l'Université de cette ville, où elle s'est spécialisée dans l'étude de la linguistique allemande et anglaise. Titulaire du brevet d'enseignement dans les gymnases et d'un doctorat en philosophie, elle a été assistante dans une école d'Angleterre avant d'enseigner l'allemand et l'anglais à Vienne, dans un gymnase de jeunes filles. Ses nombreux voyages ont conduit Johanna Bianchi en Angleterre, en France, en Italie et en Amérique du Sud. Fascinée par une randonnée dans les îles encore peu connues de l'océan Indien et par un séjour prolongé à l'île Maurice, elle a proposé aux Éditions Silva le manuscrit de ce livre. Johanna Bianchi s'est jusqu'ici fait connaître comme auteur par son étude sur la culture Louis-Philippe à Vienne et par la publication de lettres inédites des poètes autrichiens Adalbert Stifter et Franz Stelzhamer.

Peter Schornböck
Né à Iglau (Tchécoslovaquie) en 1944, il a fait ses classes à Vienne où il réside aujourd'hui. Il s'est spécialisé dans l'étude de la technique informative et des sciences du computer à l'École supérieure technique de Vienne. Il s'occupe actuellement d'analyse systématique à l'Académie autrichienne des Sciences. Depuis dix ans, Schornböck consacre une grande partie de ses loisirs à la photographie. Il a remporté de nombreuses récompenses lors de concours nationaux et internationaux. Ses voyages lui ont permis de se perfectionner dans le maniement de la caméra. La maison d'édition Silva lui a donné sa première grande chance en l'envoyant, en compagnie de Madame Johanna Bianchi, explorer les îles de l'océan Indien. Le résultat de cette collaboration texte-images fait l'objet de ce livre.

About the Authors (English Translation)

Johanna Bianchi
Born in Vienna, she attended the University there, where she specialised in the study of German and English linguistics. Holding a diploma in secondary school teaching and a doctorate of philosophy, she was an assistant in an English school before teaching German and English in Vienna, in a girls' secondary school. Her travels led Johanna Bianchi to England, France, Italy and South America. Fascinated by a trip to the still little-known islands of the Indian Ocean, and by a prolonged stay in Mauritius, she proposed the manuscript of this book to Silva Editions. Johanna Bianchi has, until now, been known as author of a study of Louis-Philippe culture in Vienna and a publication of unseen letters by the Austrian poets Adalbert Stifter and Franz Stelzhamer.

Peter Schornböck
Born in Jihlava (Czechoslovakia) in 1944, he studied in Vienna where he resides today. He specialised in the study of information technology and computer sciences at the technical college in Vienna. He currently occupies himself with systematic analysis at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. For ten years, Schornböck devoted a great part of his spare time to photography. At the time he gained many awards in national and international contests. His travels enabled him to improve his camerawork. The publisher Silva gave him its first great opportunity by sending him, in the company of Mrs Johanna Bianchi, to explore the islands of the Indian Ocean. The result of this text-image collaboration is the subject of this book.
