Pour présenter une bibliographie critique abrégée des principaux ouvrages concernant Madagascar publiés depuis quelques années nous devons, pour les grands chapitres, en excluant les innombrables articles, nous contenter de rappeler les ouvrages fondamentaux actuellement accessibles, puis de citer les publications récentes dont nous avons pu avoir connaissance, en nous restreignant aux disciplines essentielles et aux titres les plus notoires. Nous ne nous dissimulons pas les grandes lacunes d'une telle liste en la comparant avec les inventaires publiés par la Bibliothèque de l'Université de Madagascar avec laquelle nous ne voulons ni ne pouvons rivaliser.
Nous présentons sous une rubrique spéciale les ouvrages en anglais récents.
Enfin, certains chapitres sont mieux fournis que d'autres, ce qui s'explique par notre propre spécialisation.

In abridging a critical bibliography of the principal works on Madagascar published over the past few years, we have had to exclude numerous entries from the longer chapters, in order to cite the main current accessible works and recent publications, by limiting ourselves to only the essential subject areas and best known titles. We do not conceal the great gaps of such a list in comparison with the catalogues published by the University of Madagascar library, with which we cannot and do not intend to compete.
Under a separate heading we present recent works in English.
Lastly, certain chapters are more thorough than others, which reflects our own specialisations.
