About the Authors (from the First Page)

Edward Keenan, American, has taught extensively in Europe as well as in Israel and is currently professor of linguistics at the University of California at Los Angeles. His major work concerns logically based semantics for natural language and comparative syntax of world languages. His interest in world languages began with a year's stay, 1969-1970, in Madagascar.

Elinor Ochs received her Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974. Her dissertation focused on language use in Vakinankaratra, Madagascar. Currently she teaches at the department of linguistics at the University of Southern California. Her primary research interests lie in the organization of discourse across cultures and its acquisition by children.
