Madagascar & Comoros

A Travel Survival Kit

First Edition
(Travel Survival Kits)
Lonely Planet Publications (1989).
Softcover Book

This is the first edition of the Lonely Planet guide book for Madagascar and the neighbouring Comoro Islands.

Text from the Back Cover

Madagascar is different. The people and their culture, the flora and fauna – even the geography – are unique. It was once home to the legendary pirate republic of Libertalia, and various colonial influences still linger. The Comoros were called 'the islands of the moon' by early Arab seafarers and old tales say that King Solomon was the first ruler.

This new guide helps you thoroughly explore these intriguing islands, which are still largely untouched by tourism.

  • Cultural & historical background
  • More than 25 detailed maps
  • Essential phrases and vocabulary
  • Full travel information

About the Author (from Page 3)

Robert Willox is a Scottish Highlander by birth and by nature, although he still gets on reasonably well with the English. For the past eight years, however, he has made Australia his home.

A journalist since leaving school (at about four o'clock), Bob has worked for newspapers in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and, most recently, in Australia for the Sydney Morning Herald. In between newspapers, he has enjoyed stints as a philosophy graduate, a Royal Marine officer, an Antarctic expeditioner, a professional actor and an author. He wrote his first book at the age of 19, about the German bandleader James Last. But don't let that put you off; he now likes Mantovani.

Bob had not written much about his extensive travels until he crossed paths with Lonely Planet. Although his main connection with the Indian Ocean is City Beach in Perth, Western Australia, he is also the author of two other LP travel survival kits: Mauritius, Réunion & Seychelles and Maldives & Islands of the East Indian Ocean.
