Isle de Madagascar, autrement Isle de St. Laurent

Eiland Madagaskar, of St. Laurens

[Island of Madagascar, or St. Lawrence Island]
Unpublished reproduction (2006). (First Published 1747)
Single Sheet

A colour reproduction of a map of Madagascar by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) who was appointed hydrographer to the French Navy in 1721, and became ingénieur hydrographe in 1741. This map is originally from a Dutch version of Bellin's world atlas published in 1750 by Pieter de Hondt, The Hague.

Note Inscribed Alongside Map (English Translation)

The South East Part of this Island lying between the Mandreray and Antavare Rivers requires a particular detail that it has not been possible to insert here, but which can be found in the map of [Étienne] de Flacourt published in 1656.

  • Replicated from a map in the collection of the University of Florida Library.
