This is a book of datasheets on Malagasy mammals and birds. Alison Jolly, who collaborated on the project, explains in an email (a printout of which accompanies the book as a loose insert) that this publication came about when she pursuaded the Minister of Education that a flora and fauna book should be produced for schoolchildren. However, in the event, ORSTOM (Office de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique de Outre-Mer, the French office for scientific and technical research overseas) produced datasheets that were too technical for school use, and they came to be used primarily by university students instead.
